The proposal includes the retention of the one-hour parking limit in the main Barnards Green shopping area and increasing the two-hour short stay Geraldine Road Car Park to medium stay, with a new parking cap of four hours.
The joint plans, which have been submitted by both Conservative councillors to Worcestershire County Council and Malvern Hills District Council also include a proposal to add a number of free two-hour on street parking areas just off Barnards Green which will go out consultation later this year.
Councillor Melanie Baker, said: “With so many independent shops, Barnards Green is one of the exceptional shopping areas that retail guru Mary Portas refers to in her recent independent review of our high streets.
“It has a popular butcher, baker, cheese shop, hairdressers, café and much more. They are family-run shops owned by traders who never cease to amaze with their innovation, resilience and total commitment to providing the best shopping experience possible.
“When local traders approached myself and Councillor Hodgson to ask for our help in proposing new parking options we were only too happy to lend our support and input. I believe we have submitted a well thought-out parking plan and one which is backed by the shop owners.”
County Councillor Lucy Hodgson, added: “With difficult trading conditions, it is important that we recognise what is happening in Barnards Green and respond accordingly. I believe if our proposal is approved by all parties it will give a variety of choices for shoppers.
"It is a prime example of councillors and traders working together to provide a joint solution which supports business, the local economy and encourages trade."
Jane Knowles who owns Barnards Green gift shop, Just So, said: "All traders in Barnards Green work hard to deliver a convenient, varied and vibrant shopping area for customers.
"If approved the new parking arrangements will give people much improved parking options. It will allow them to linger for longer so they can pop in to buy a card or sandwich, visit the butchers and bakers, spend longer having their hair done and have lunch in the cafe. It’s a potential great solution for all.”
The first stage of the proposals which will see the Geraldine Road car park changed to a medium stay car park was recently unanimously approved at Executive Committee . Councillor Baker, Conservative member for Chase ward said "I am thrilled with the response from the Executive Committee" she added that traders will be kept fully up-to-date with the proposals.
