As you will know from my previous email bulletins I have been campaigning with the Kenilworth-based Dogs Trust against the abuse of the domestic pet passport scheme. Tens of thousands of dogs are being imported into the UK every year and many of these are sickly animals being sold to unsuspecting owners. It means families are often left with huge vets bills or an animal with serious behavioural problems. To make matters worse vets, particularly in eastern Europe, are falsifying documentation. To put simply, we have rules which are not being followed.
The Dogs Trust and its partner charities have been calling for a review of the rules for almost two years but the European Commission has refused every request.
The good news is that we have now secured that review and it will be done before Christmas.
This is a small but significant step in addressing this terrible issue. Too many pets and too many families are suffering.
I will of course keep you updated on my progress but in the meantime you can find more information on my website at http://www.danieldaltonmep.co.uk/news/dalton-secures-puppy-importation-review.
