Sarah McDermott, the Conservative County Council candidate for Croome in the forthcoming May elections, has backed a proposal to move the Upton Library from its current location to the High Street.
The move was first mooted by the Deputy Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, Jeremy Owenson. The proposal was to see if the library could be moved to the High Street, to make it more prominent and accessible. “Libraries are dependent on footfall, and the location of the current library means it is hidden from public view. If the Library was on the High Street, similar to Tenbury Wells, it would not only improve the quality of the High Street but would make the library more useful for residents.” says McDermott.
“With the library being more prominent, it could then become a multi-use facility. I ask residents to come forward with their suggestions on groups and events that could benefit from a new, redesigned library.”
Jeremy Owenson’s original proposal was to close the existing site and sell the land for more appropriate development. The capital released from the sale could fund the fitting out of a new building, and support the library for years to come.
